What is Web usability?
Atsushi Kubo

Recent years, rapid development of web sites-related technology (Flash, Java Script, CSS…) makes lots web sites stylish and beautiful, and some of these get dynamic movement. That kind of web sites surely pleases us. However, Can we easily get the correct information that we really want to know? When we talk about that kind of problem, we need the concept of “Web Usability”.

International web standard created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

“Extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.”

When we think about “Web” usability, we just change the word “product” to the “web sites”. Then, I specify these three words in the Web Usability concept.

  • “Effectiveness”
“Accuracy and completeness with which users achieve specified goals”
=Can we get all the correct information that we want to know?

  • “Efficiency”
“Resources expended in relation to the accuracy and completeness with which users achieve goals”
=How much time and effort we spend to get information?

  • ”Satisfaction”
“Freedom from discomfort, and positive attitudes towards the use of the web sites”
=Can we use the internet with no stress?

Where is the Navigation?

For instance, it is assumed take for example that you are looking for a Wedding Hall. You type “Wedding Hall” in a Search Engine sites, like Yahoo, or Google. Then you click one link from your search results that you think is most suitable for you. However, all you see is a long image like a movie. If you want to know information such as plans or dishes, you don’t know where you should click on the screen. Finally, you feel this is a troublesome web site, so you would click to another site.

The certain web site about Wedding Hall (Where can we click?)

HTML was originally written for the purpose of reaching information to readers by a very simple structure. However, irritating websites increased because of an excessive amount of decoration.

Furthermore, can we ignore the existence of minority is who have a handicap when using the Internet? A totally blind person uses a browser reading words of a website aloud by sound. However, it doesn’t read the words on images. Besides, web sites made with Flash entirely can’t give information to totally blind user at all.

The web site with no concept of Web Usability

In these 10 years, the world of Internet has expanded rapidly, and information on the internet has increased extraordinary. So, people who build web sites make their web sites more beautiful. A person building a website should take consider “Web Usability” into their web sites.
