There is often a direct correlation between the dieters state of mind and the dieters perceived progress with the diet. This is for obvious reasons. Exercise works against depression, both by distracting the mind and by physiologically bringing needed chemicals and fresh oxygen into the brain. The more active involvement with exercise and dieting the better both for the diet and the spirit of the dieter. Conversely when the dieter is locked in low self esteem, frustration, anxiety, and other common symptoms, dieting becomes the enemy in a war of selves, punishable by gluttony and sloth, springing the dieter into a downward spiral.

Despite all the negative opinions people had for the Atkins diet, when I was practicing it last Spring, there is still the documented fact I both lost weight and felt better. My love life was better as well.

Recently I have been entangled in despair and eating has increased, while exercise has fallen to an all time low. There are pragmatic reasons for this, the busyness of my schedule at work and the onslaught of winter, but, invariably, I will need to radically reverse this tendency, or face a loss of everything I had worked so hard for last year. For the dieter, engagement in the struggle is inevitable and unavoidable. No matter how much we resist physical activity and lust the hiding place of carbohydrate consumption, eventually it is a choice between the good life or a slow sad death.
