When weight is a 'problem' your spirit swings on what others say about it. In my case, students can not imagine why anyone would 'choose' to be over-weight. Friends, on the other hand, are often enthusiastic when asking, if I have lost weight, as a form of complement and encouragement. Students remind me how handsome I could be IF I just lost weight. Friends seem to want to remind me that it shouldn't matter all that much, while the truth remains 'the way we look and feel does matter'.
When things are going well I forget this issue, but as the 'problem' is with me always, when clothes do not fit, when I have difficulty in bending and reaching, when climbing stairs, and in the always haunting chance reflection that brings 'what others see' back into perspective... being over weight remains a sad and persistent source of inadequacy.

Because I can not accept all this, I have decided to dedicate this year to both diet and exercise, until success reaches an equilibrium and my weight no longer feels a 'problem'. As any addicted person knows, the addictions will not go away, but I CAN and should find a life style of maintenance that works.

My present focus will be swimming for exercise and experimenting with Atkins for dieting. Both are still in the preparation stages, but I hope to be implementing both in the coming weeks.
